Start Freelancing Guide

You don’t need a business, a website, or a plan to begin.

You just need a skill—and a first step.

This content is for informational purposes only and does not constitute business, financial, or legal advice.

Step 1: Get Your First Client
Goal: Start earning as quickly as possible.

You do NOT need:

  • An LLC

  • A business bank account

  • A polished website

You DO need:

  • A clear skill

  • A simple profile

  • A willingness to start small

Pick a Skill

Choose something you already know how to do:

  • Writing / editing

  • Admin support

  • Marketing / social media

  • Project coordination

  • Data entry / research

  • Consulting (your prior role experience counts)

Create a Simple Website:

Carrd

Popular, affordable, and perfect for a simple, fast, and clear portfolio or service page.

GoDaddy

Known for being incredibly fast to set up, ideal for novices.

Canva

Allows for designing and publishing simple, professional websites instantly.

Squarespace

Renowned for sleek, modern, and high-quality design templates.

Webflow

Provides more advanced visual design tools for those needing more control.

Wix

Offers design freedom with a very intuitive drag-and-drop editor.

Tip: You'll need to setup a website domain before your website launches. These platforms will assist you with the process.

Create a Simple Profile
Goal: Start with one platform. Add additional platforms later.

Contra

Modern, commission-free platform—keep more of what you earn while building your brand.

Fiverr

Fastest way to start—productize your service and let clients come to you.

Toptal

Premium clients and rates—ideal if you have strong experience and can pass screening.

Upwork

Largest pool of active clients—consistent opportunities across almost every skill level.

Freelancer

High volume of job postings—good for testing offers and landing early projects.

Select Operational Tools to Help You Get Started

ChatGPT

AI assistants for drafting proposals, writing, and brainstorming.

ClickUp

Manage projects by combining tasks, docs, and communications with AI tools.

Moxie

Specialized app for freelance scheduling, CRM, and invoicing.

Notion

Step 2: Get Paid
Goal:
Make it easy for clients to pay you. Set up a payment account through one of these options.

Toast

When to use: Best for restaurants and food businesses that need an all-in-one POS, payments, and operations system.

Venmo

When to use: Ideal for small, informal jobs or repeat clients—fast and easy, but less professional for larger engagements.

Square

When to use: Ideal if you work in person or want simple invoicing—great for local services, quick payments, and easy setup without complexity.

PayPal

When to use: Best for quick, professional payments—especially with new or remote clients who want a trusted, widely accepted option.

Stripe

When to use: Best for a polished, business-ready setup—send invoices, accept cards, and automate payments as you start working with higher-value clients.

Step 3: Build Momentum
Goal: Turn one client into many. Small, consistent actions - not big leaps - create steady income.

With each job

  • Send a recap of what you delivered

  • Propose a specific next step

  • Ask: “Would you like me to continue with [X]?”

  • Offer a small add-on or extension

  • Request a testimonial for use in your profile and on your website

Weekly system

  • Send 10 new outreach messages per week

  • Follow up with 5 past contacts

  • Submit 2–3 platform proposals

  • Ask 1 client for a testimonial

  • Ask 1 client for a referral

Self-Promotion

  • Share short posts - quick wins, before/after successes (no sensitive info), a repeatable process, an answer to common industry questions

  • Comment on posts in your industry

  • Reconnect with past colleagues or clients

  • Ask for introductions (light touch)

You don't need to do everything - just start.
Most people get stuck before they begin.
You're already ahead.
